Business Development Manager - Optics

Reports to: Optics Sales Manager

Department: Optics Business Unit Sales and Marketing


Job Summary:

Join our talented team of professionals to grow Moxtek's Optics Business Unit. Help define future business opportunities and recommend business growth strategies that are profitable and sustainable. This role requires working closely with our Sales/Marketing and Development teams to identify and guide new products and services through the product life cycle. We are looking for an effective team player who is results driven.

Job Duties and Competencies:

  • Lead Optics Business Development. Prioritize projects based on market potential and work with engineering and R&D to develop new products in a timely manner.
  • Develop marketing strategies and business opportunities that grow Moxtek Optics Business Unit. Utilize optical/technical experience combined with market research to define new business opportunities for Moxtek's existing optical products and identify market / industry opportunities for new product development.
  • Provide information for management by preparing short-term and long-term product roadmaps, special reports, and analyses.
  • Bring new products to market by analyzing proposed product requirements and product development programs, preparing return-on-investment analyses, and coordinating schedules with engineering and manufacturing.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, industry influencers, and potential customers to drive business opportunities.
  • Use established industry networks and associations to promote Moxtek products and capabilities while identifying potential market opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Sales team to identify and pursue new business leads, develop customized proposals, and participate in client presentations.
  • Conduct financial analysis, including market sizing, revenue projections, and profitability assessments, to support business case development for new ventures. Work with Sales manager to establish pricing strategies and business models for new products and services.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of new business initiatives, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and recommend adjustments to optimize outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including marketing, sales, and engineering, to ensure alignment and support for new business initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex ideas into clear and compelling messages.
  • Clearly define requirements to provide products & services. Provide content for product marketing collateral as needed.
  • Visit customers to progress business opportunities with key customers, attend/promote Moxtek at conference talks and presentations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, and manufacturing, to translate concepts into market-ready products.
  • Regularly perform competitive analysis (S.W.O.T) and recommend strategies to improve market position.
  • Assist Product Manager in training Sales and Marketing team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with customers, engineers, and other team members.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills. Exceptional problem-solver.
  • Technical understanding of Optics. Understand polarization of light and its applications.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Effective at working with customers, technical experts, engineering teams, and Sales and Marketing.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, with an ability to source new business critical to the growth of the Optics product line.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, SAS JMP, and product lifecycle management software.

Education and Experience

  • BS technical degree in optics, physics, or engineering.
  • 5-8 years of experience in optical engineering or related fields.
  • BD, PM, or marketing experience required.
  • MBA is a plus.
